Understanding and using EveryVoice™ speech analysis
Certain activities in this application use Transparent Language's groundbreaking EveryVoice speech analysis technology. Unlike traditional speech technologies, EveryVoice works in almost any language. At Transparent Language, we want to support the learning and appreciation of all of the Earth's languages, regardless of commercial value. Since traditional speech analysis technology is only available for a tiny fraction of the world's languages, we built EveryVoice.
We believe that EveryVoice is the best technology of its kind available anywhere at any price. Of course, no speech analysis technology is 100% perfect. If you are not satisfied with the experience of any speech-driven activity, we always provide the option to switch to using a mouse, keyboard, or other form of input.
If your EveryVoice results are inaccurate, sometimes just changing the way you set up or use your equipment will solve the problem. One-time issues such as an extraneous noise during recording or a slip of the tongue can be remedied just by re-recording your answer.
If problems persist, you might try to the following:
- Reduce background noise. EveryVoice filters background noise fairly well, but the less extra sound, the better. Keep your microphone away from the computer's fan.
- Try a headset microphone rather than the microphone built into your computer. Even an inexpensive one may improve results.
- Make sure your microphone settings are adjusted correctly, and speak at a medium-loud volume. When you listen to your recording, it should play at about the same volume as the native speaker's.
- Make sure your microphone isn't too close or too far from your mouth. For many microphones, the best results are achieved with the microphone a hand span away from your mouth. Try placing the microphone level with your mouth but somewhat to the side, rather than in front of your lips.
- If your microphone is on a stand, try putting it on a book or small box rather than on the same surface as your mouse. Otherwise, noises made by moving or clicking the mouse may be transmitted to the microphone.
- Don't start or stop recording too early or too late. EveryVoice will try to ignore background noise before or after you speak, but it is best to record just the time when you are speaking, without cutting off the beginning or the end.
We're excited about EveryVoice. We hope you enjoy it and find it a valuable learning tool. If you have any feedback, we would be pleased to hear from you.
