Things to know about Mongolian

Mongolian is the language spoken by the Mongol people. Today, the language is spoken primarily in Mongolia, although it is also an official language in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China.

If your Mongolian lessons require you to type Mongolian characters, follow the instructions immediately below to do so. If your lessons use transliterated Mongolian, see the Using Transliterated Mongolian Lessons section further down.

Using Mongolian Lessons

Mongolian uses a Cyrillic alphabet, similar but not identical to that of Russian. Mongolian text is written from left to right, the same as English.

To type Mongolian characters:

  1. Position your cursor somewhere where you can type, and verify that the virtual keyboard layout is set to Mongolian.
  2. Locate the character you want on the virtual keyboard, then click on it or press the corresponding key on your physical keyboard. Capital letters and numbers are available by holding down the Shift key. The exclamation point is available by clicking Special Characters beside the virtual keyboard. See Typing special scripts for details.

Using Transliterated Mongolian Lessons

Some units may include transliterated Mongolian lessons in addition to lessons which use the actual Mongolian characters. Transliterated lessons can help you master vocabulary and pronunciation before tackling a new writing system.

You do not have to type actual Mongolian characters in transliterated Mongolian lessons. You can type the transliterations in any activity or assessment that requires typed answers.

The transliterated Mongolian content may use the special characters ö and ü. See Typing accents or special characters for instructions on typing these characters.
