Things to know about Tuvan

Tuvan is a language spoken in the Republic of Tuva, a Russian republic which is located in south-central Siberia. It is a member of the Turkic language family.

If your Tuvan lessons require you to type Tuvan characters, follow the instructions immediately below to do so. If your lessons use transliterated Tuvan, see the Using Transliterated Tuvan Lessons section further down.

Using Tuvan Lessons

Tuvan uses a Cyrillic alphabet, similar but not identical to that of Russian. Tuvan text is written from left to right, the same as English.

To type Tuvan characters:

  1. Position your cursor somewhere where you can type, and verify that the virtual keyboard layout is set to Tuvan.
  2. Locate the character you want on the virtual keyboard, then click on it or press the corresponding key on your physical keyboard. Capital letters are available by holding down the Shift key. See Typing special scripts for details.

Using Transliterated Tuvan Lessons

Some units may include transliterated Tuvan lessons in addition to lessons which use the actual Tuvan characters. Transliterated lessons can help you master vocabulary and pronunciation before tackling a new writing system.

You do not have to type actual Tuvan characters in transliterated Tuvan lessons. You can type the transliterations in any activity or assessment that requires typed answers.

The transliterated Tuvan content may use special characters such as ü. See Typing accents or special characters for instructions on typing these characters.
