Spanish is the most widely spoken Romance language in terms of the number of speakers and the number of countries which claim it as an official language. The instructions in this topic apply whether you are learning Latin American Spanish, Castilian Spanish, or any other dialect.
Spanish is written in a variation of the Latin alphabet which includes the special character ñ. It also uses characters with diacritic marks, including á, é, í, ó, ú, and ü, to indicate stress and other aspects of pronunciation. Certain Spanish sentences also require inverted punctuation marks (¿ and ¡) at the beginning. There are two methods for typing these characters.
The simplest method is to use the character suggestions. To do so, type the base character for the letter or inverted punctuation mark you want, then select the special character from the set of characters which appears.
The other method is to use the virtual keyboard with the layout set to Spanish. (If necessary, you can change the layout by clicking and selecting an option in the Keyboard Language menu.)
Locate the character you want on the virtual keyboard, then click on it or press the corresponding key on your physical keyboard. The Spanish layout provides access to certain common special characters, such as ñ. Capital letters and certain punctuation marks are available by holding down the Shift key.
See Typing Accents and Special Characters for details on both typing methods.
