Things to know about Latin

Latin was the language of ancient Rome and the source of the modern Romance languages, including Spanish, French, Italian, and many others. Though there are no more native Latin speakers, the language is still commonly studied by scholars and others, for a wide variety of reasons.

Typing Latin Characters

The characters used to write Latin will look very familiar to English speakers - even today, the Latin alphabet is used to write English and many other languages. However, some Latin texts may use characters with diacritic marks to indicate long vowel sounds. You can type these characters by typing the base character for the letter you want, then selecting the special character from the set of characters which appears.

See Typing Accents and Special Characters for details on typing methods.

Listening to Latin

Because there are no longer any "native" speakers for Latin, all of the Latin sound in this program has been recorded by expert speakers. Whenever the program and its documentation mention native speakers, it refers to these expert speakers in the case of Latin.
