Kazakh is primarily spoken in Kazakhstan, one of the former republics of the Soviet Union, although there are also communities of Kazakh speakers in China, Mongolia, and other areas.
If your Kazakh lessons require you to type Kazakh characters, follow the instructions immediately below to do so. If your lessons use transliterated Kazakh, see the Using Transliterated Kazakh Lessons section further down.
In Kazakhstan, Kazakh uses a Cyrillic alphabet, similar but not identical to that of Russian. In other areas, particularly in China, it can also be written with a variation of the Arabic alphabet. This program uses the Cyrillic alphabet for Kazakh. Kazakh texts in this alphabet are written from left to right, the same as English.
Some units may include transliterated Kazakh lessons in addition to lessons which use the actual Kazakh characters. Transliterated lessons can help you master vocabulary and pronunciation before tackling a new writing system.
You do not have to type actual Kazakh characters in transliterated Kazakh lessons. You can type the transliterations in any activity or assessment that requires typed answers.
The transliterated Kazakh content may use special characters such as ö. See Typing accents or special characters for instructions on typing these characters.
