Things to know about Georgian

Georgian is the official language of the country of Georgia. It is a member of the South Caucasian family of languages.

If your Georgian lessons require you to type Georgian characters, follow the instructions immediately below to do so. If your lessons use transliterated Georgian, see the Using Transliterated Georgian Lessons section further down.

Using Georgian Lessons

Georgian is written from left to right, just like English. Since the 13th century, Georgian has used the Mkhedruli alphabet, which has 33 letters.

To type Georgian characters:

  1. Position your cursor somewhere where you can type, and verify that the virtual keyboard layout is set to Georgian.
  2. Locate the character you want on the virtual keyboard, then click on it or press the corresponding key on your physical keyboard. Note that most punctuation marks, such the period and the comma, correspond to the number keys in the Georgian layout. Numbers are available by holding down the Shift key. Georgian does not have capital letters, so other characters will not change when the Shift key is held down. See Typing special scripts for details.

Using Transliterated Georgian Lessons

Some units may include transliterated Georgian lessons in addition to lessons which use the actual Georgian characters. Transliterated lessons can help you master vocabulary and pronunciation before tackling a new writing system.

You do not have to type actual Georgian characters in transliterated Georgian lessons. You can type the transliterations in any activity or assessment that requires typed answers. Transliterated Georgian does not require any special characters.
