Things to know about Bulgarian

Most Bulgarian speakers live in Bulgaria, although there are also sizeable communities in Macedonia and elsewhere. Bulgarian is a member of the Southern branch of the Slavic language family, and is related to Macedonian, Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian, and Slovene.

If your Bulgarian lessons require you to type Bulgarian characters, follow the instructions immediately below to do so. If your lessons use transliterated Bulgarian, see the Using Transliterated Bulgarian Lessons section further down.

Using Bulgarian Lessons

Bulgarian uses a Cyrillic alphabet, similar but not identical to that of Russian. Bulgarian text is written from left to right, the same as English.

To type Bulgarian characters:

  1. Position your cursor somewhere where you can type, and verify that the virtual keyboard layout is set to Bulgarian.
  2. Locate the character you want on the virtual keyboard, then click on it or press the corresponding key on your physical keyboard. Capital letters and certain punctuation marks, such as the question mark, are available by holding down the Shift key. See Typing special scripts for details.

Using Transliterated Bulgarian Lessons

Some units may include transliterated Bulgarian lessons in addition to lessons which use the actual Bulgarian characters. Transliterated lessons can help you master vocabulary and pronunciation before tackling a new writing system.

You do not have to type actual Bulgarian characters in transliterated Bulgarian lessons. You can type the transliterations in any activity or assessment that requires typed answers. Transliterated Bulgarian does not require any special characters.
