Things to know about Armenian

Armenian is the official language of Armenia, and is also spoken in parts of Iran, Georgia, Turkey, Azerbaijan, and other countries. The Armenian alphabet was developed around the year 404 AD by Mesrop Mashtots, a cleric at the Armenian royal court.

If your Armenian lessons require you to type Armenian characters, follow the instructions immediately below to do so. If your lessons use transliterated Armenian, see the Using Transliterated Armenian Lessons section further down.

Using Armenian Lessons

Armenian is written with its own unique alphabet. Armenian text is written from left to right, the same as English.

To type Armenian characters:

  1. Position your cursor somewhere where you can type, and verify that the virtual keyboard layout is set to Armenian.
  2. Locate the character you want on the virtual keyboard, then click on it or press the corresponding key on your physical keyboard. Capital letters are available by holding down the Shift key. Note that several punctuation marks, such the comma and quotation marks, correspond to the number keys on the Armenian keyboard. See Typing special scripts for details.

Using Transliterated Armenian Lessons

Some units may include transliterated Armenian lessons in addition to lessons which use the actual Armenian characters. Transliterated lessons can help you master vocabulary and pronunciation before tackling a new writing system.

You do not have to type actual Armenian characters in transliterated Armenian lessons. You can type the transliterations in any activity or assessment that requires typed answers.
