Things to know about Tajiki

Tajiki is spoken in Tajikistan as well as in parts of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Afghanistan, and Uzbekistan. The language is also sometimes known as "Tadjik" and other similar variations.

If your Tajiki lessons require you to type Tajiki characters, follow the instructions immediately below to do so. If your lessons use transliterated Tajiki, see the Using Transliterated Tajiki Lessons section further down.

Using Tajiki Lessons

Tajiki has been written with a variety of alphabets over the course of its history. Currently, most Tajiki speakers use a version of the Cyrillic alphabet, similar but not identical to that of Russian. Tajiki text in this alphabet is written from left to right, the same as English.

To type Tajiki characters:

  1. Position your cursor somewhere where you can type, and verify that the virtual keyboard layout is set to Tajiki.
  2. Locate the character you want on the virtual keyboard, then click on it or press the corresponding key on your physical keyboard. Capital letters and certain punctuation marks, such as the question mark, are available by holding down the Shift key. See Typing special scripts for details.

Using Transliterated Tajiki Lessons

Some units may include transliterated Tajiki lessons in addition to lessons which use the actual Tajiki characters. Transliterated lessons can help you master vocabulary and pronunciation before tackling a new writing system.

You do not have to type actual Tajiki characters in transliterated Tajiki lessons. You can type the transliterations in any activity or assessment that requires typed answers.
