Things to know about Macedonian

Macedonian is primarily spoken in the Republic of Macedonia, although there are communities of Macedonian speakers in Greece and elsewhere. Macedonian is a member of the Southern branch of the Slavic language family.

If your Macedonian lessons require you to type Macedonian characters, follow the instructions immediately below to do so. If your lessons use transliterated Macedonian, see the Using Transliterated Macedonian Lessons section further down.

Using Macedonian Lessons

Macedonian uses a Cyrillic alphabet, similar but not identical to that of Russian. Macedonian text is written from left to right, the same as English.

To type Macedonian characters:

  1. Position your cursor somewhere where you can type, and verify that the virtual keyboard layout is set to Macedonian.
  2. Locate the character you want on the virtual keyboard, then click on it or press the corresponding key on your physical keyboard. Capital letters and certain punctuation marks, such as the question mark, are available by holding down the Shift key. A few additional characters are available by holding down the Ctrl and Alt keys at the same time. See Typing special scripts for details.

Using Transliterated Macedonian Lessons

Some units may include transliterated Macedonian lessons in addition to lessons which use the actual Macedonian characters. Transliterated lessons can help you master vocabulary and pronunciation before tackling a new writing system.

You do not have to type actual Macedonian characters in transliterated Macedonian lessons. You can type the transliterations in any activity or assessment that requires typed answers.
